Index for Channel Migration Assessment.

The Washington State Shoreline Management Act (SMA) and administrative codes require that communities identify the general location of channel migration zones (CMZs) and regulate development within these areas on shoreline streams (WAC 173-26-201(3) (c) (vii)). Shoreline streams are defined as those with a mean annual flow equal or greater than 20 cfs. The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) developed a planning-level CMZ delineation (pCMZ) method to support local communities’ updates and implementation of the SMA requirements. The method was used by Ecology to map CMZs for shoreline communities.

None. The CMZ maps are only planning level and developed using GIS without field verification. They are only appropriate for planning purposes and do not depict channel migration and related hazards on a particular site or reach.
