The focus of this project originally was on the production of a geologic database in ARC/INFO coverage format. In order to make these data more widely usable, we have merged the quadrangle-based coverages into a statewide database, which was then converted into ESRI shapefiles followed by importing to a geodatabase that can be used in a variety of geographic information systems (GIS) applications. This dataset was tailored for use at a scale of 1:100,000; use at larger scales would be inappropriate.</suppInfo>

<measDesc>Positions of features (polygons of geologic units) are constrained by and generated from the positions of contacts and faults that are portrayed in contact_100k and fault_100k and their positional accuracy is essentially the same as for those features in there two feature classes. Features mapped in the field were positioned on a 1:100,000-scale base map in the field by noting the position of the feature with reference to nearby features that could be identified on the base map. Features compiled from existing geologic maps were positioned by noting their position with reference to features that could be identified on both the source map and the 1:100,000-scale base map. Thus the positions are as accurate as the portrayal of identifiable topographic or cultural features allowed. The features were transferred to or recorded on scale-stable overlays to scale-stable copies of the 1:100,000-scale base maps. The overlays were georeferenced in ArcInfo using the four corners for control, usually to an RMS error of 0.003 or better, and the features digitized as accurately as the digitizing table "puck" crosshairs could be positioned over the feature, typically with the use of a magnifying lens. Plots of the digital data were compared with the author's original scale-stable materials to ensure correctness of position.</measDesc>

<stepDesc>The process the Division of Geology and Earth Resources used to create 1:100,000-scale digital geology of Washington State initially consisted of making a set of ArcInfo coverages for each 1:100,000-scale quadrangle in Washington. These coverages were digitized from scale-stable Mylar geologic maps that had been compiled by Division of Geology and Earth Resources staff or scale-stable geologic maps or ArcInfo coverages compiled by staff of the U.S. Geological Survey. The individual quadrangle coverages were then combined to form a set of statewide ArcInfo coverages. Since then we have converted the statewide ArcInfo coverages to ESRI shapefiles, revised the data structure, and performed topology and projection checks. Our next step was to again revise and improve the data structure and import the shapefiles into a geodatabase. This dataset underwent extensive attributing and editing of the geologic features and various check plots were prepared and proofread in order to verify the locational accuracy of the features and to check for any errors in attributes. Additional checks for attribute errors were made on the computer workstation. Version History Version 3.1 (November, 2016): Each feature class in the 100k geologic database was reviewed in a thorough QAQC process. A number of errors in the attribution, location, and digitizing direction of features were identified and corrected. Connected line features with identical coding that represent the same geologic features (usually contacts or faults) were merged. Replaced contents of Tacoma quadrangle with Schuster and others (2015) digital mapping. Version 3.0 (June, 2010): The entire surface geology 100k dataset was migrated from shapefiles to a geodatabase. Feature class names and attribute names were changed, and metadata for the entire dataset was updated. Version 2.0 (September, 2008) Editing was done on gunitl100k.shp where numerous duplicate arcs were removed and coding on faults was corrected. In version 1.0, gunitl100k.shp had many duplicate faults and coding errors. Three fields were added and attributed to gdate100k.shp, gline100k.shp, gpoint100,.shp, and gunitp100k.shp. These fields contain the age, lithology, and named units of the geologic polygons. In gpoint100k.shp, GPOINT_CD was incorrect in version 1.0 and this has been corrected. Empty fields were deleted in gdate100k.shp (REM_TXT and LABEL_TXT), gdike100k.shp (DIKE_NM), gfold100k.shp (FOLD_NM), gline100k.shp (REM_TXT), gpoint100k.shp (LABEL_TXT and REM_TXT), and gunitl100k.shp (FAULT_NM). Unneeded fields were deleted from both gdate100k.shp and gpoint100k.shp (SITE_NO). Metadata for the entire dataset was updated. Version 1.0 (December, 2005) Original 1:100,000-scale coverages were merged into a statewide shapefile.</stepDesc>

<attrdef>Relative or absolute age of the sample. The relative age is a geochronologic unit during which the rocks were formed according to the Geologic Time Scale (see http://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/2007/3015/fs2007-3015.pdf). A geochronologic unit is a division of time based on the rock record. In order of decreasing rank they are eon, era, period, epoch, and age. Most relative ages are given in terms of period and (or) epoch. For the Cenozoic era, the age is usually given as either the period (Quaternary or Tertiary) or epoch (Holocene, Pleistocene, or Miocene, for example). For the Mesozoic and Paleozoic, the age is given either as the period (Jurassic) or the epoch (usually Late, Middle or Early) followed by the period (Early Cretaceous or Late Triassic, for example). Absolute age consists of a number followed by a unit and is an estimation the number of years since the rock formed. A +/- gives the margin of error. For example, the entry '140.0+/-4.2 my' means that the rock is estimated to be 140,000,000 years old, but there could be an error of as much as 4,200,000 years either way. Additional information may be given on the dating method used to arrive at the age (for example, fission track, UPb, hornblende, or biotite).</attrdef>
