Description: The Washington State Shoreline Management Act (SMA) and administrative codes require that communities identify the general location of channel migration zones (CMZs) and regulate development within these areas on shoreline streams (WAC 173-26-201(3) (c) (vii)). Shoreline streams are defined as those with a mean annual flow equal or greater than 20 cfs. The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) developed a planning-level CMZ delineation (pCMZ) method to support local communities’ updates and implementation of the SMA requirements. The method was used by Ecology to map CMZs for shoreline communities.

Description: Each segment of the shoreline has an "environment designation" that reflects its existing land use pattern, zoning, ecological condition and the types of health and safety hazards that are present (flooding, landslides, geology, and other characteristics). The environment designations, which are depicted, provide a framework for tailoring shoreline policies and regulations to different shoreline segments based on their characteristics.
